Italy is world renowned for its excellence in design, fashion and textiles.

This Centre of Competence aims to transfer and adapt these unique skills to the space environment, creating innovative synergies between aesthetics, functionality and advanced technology.

We envision a future in which Italian style and ingenuity define not only the appearance, but also the overall experience of life in space.

From interior design for space stations to high-tech fabrics for astronaut suits, from fashion for space tourism to luxury items for orbiting facilities, we aim to set new standards of elegance, comfort and functionality in the extraterrestrial environment.

Our research and development areas include:

  • Advanced Materials: Development of smart fabrics and composite materials that meet the unique challenges of the space environment, such as radiation protection and thermal regulation.
  • Ergonomic Design in Microgravity: Creating furniture and tools optimised for use in weightlessness, combining functionality and Italian style.

  • Space Fashion: Designing clothing and accessories for astronauts and future space tourists, combining aesthetics, comfort and technical performance.

  • Orbiting Luxury: Conceptualisation and design of luxury elements for advanced space facilities, such as orbiting hotels and entertainment centres in space.

  • Space Haute Couture: Creating exclusive clothing lines for space tourism, combining Italian haute couture with the functional requirements of the space environment. This includes transformable garments, multifunctional luxury accessories, exclusive fabrics with advanced technical performance and designs that enhance the silhouette in weightlessness, creating new aesthetic trends specifically for the space environment.

  • Sensory Design for Space: Creating environments and products that stimulate the senses in a unique way in the space environment, compensating for the lack of natural stimuli. This includes the use of materials that change texture or colour in response to various stimuli, biodynamic lighting systems, and devices that emulate earthly smells and tastes to counteract astronauts’ homesickness.

  • Luxury Spacecraft Design: Applying Italian expertise in luxury yacht design to spacecraft, creating interiors and exteriors that combine refined aesthetics, extreme comfort and advanced functionality for elite space tourism.
